She and Emmett founded the New Melleray Athletic Association providing baseball and softball team activities for the kids and people of the Holy Family Parish.
Dorothy enjoyed quilting, embroidering and praying. She especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gilman was an excellent cook and won the Hawai'i State Chili Championship Cookoff. Gilman served his country in the US Army National Guard for 6 years and served 6 months active duty.
He was active in fundraising for organizations such as ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue (Hawaii Athletics) and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
He is also survived by two brothers, Steve (Linda) and David (Lisa) Palmer; two step-brothers, Craig (Kay) and Doug (Ellen) Peters; and nieces and nephews.She is survived by six children, Cherie Mc Dermott of Epworth, Terry (Kathy) Mc Dermott of Peosta, Tim (Lori) Mc Dermott of Bernard, Tom (Stephanie) Mc Dermott of Cascade, Todd (Dana) Mc Dermott of Bernard, and Trace (Karen) Mc Dermott of Marion; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one brother Gene (Jean) Potts of Asbury and five sisters-in-law, Kay Potts, Virginia Potts, Margie Sweeney and Irene Mc Dermott all of Epworth, IA and Patricia Larkin of Bernard, IA. The family would like to thank the staffs at both River Bend Retirement Community, Shady Rest Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care and compassion shown to Dorothy. Palmer, 62, of Dubuque died Tuesday, July 03, 2018 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer with his loving family at his side.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emmett A Mc Dermott on Sep.
